What Should You Do When Your Roof Leaks?
Keep people safe first
Keep everyone clear of wet floors and of water near ceiling fans, light fixtures or outlets, and leave any wet electrical fixture alone. Do not go onto the roof during rain, wind or lightning, and wait until the weather has fully cleared before looking outside.
Contain the water indoors
Shift furniture, rugs and electronics away from drips and place buckets or towels under them. If a ceiling sags with trapped water, keep people out of the room. Temporary tarping is a job for the roofing contractor.
Call to reach a roofer
Tell the roofer where water shows up, when it began, whether it happens only in wind-driven rain or with every shower, and the roof's age and material. Photograph stains and damage with dates for your records and any insurance claim.
A slow roof leak can soak insulation, rot decking and stain ceilings over weeks. See storm damage roof help or call the referral line.
